Just watched Girls Town (1996) via netflix and HOLY SHIT. new favorite movie alert. I heard of this in a conversation about the movie Kids, and now I understand that juxtaposition but I also resent because Girls Town is not exploitative shit trying to pass off as ‘realism.’ (Oops did I just say that? YES!) Seriously, you’re still watching The Craft to get your angry grrrl kicks? I mean don’t get me wrong, I love the Craft but DAMN THIS MOVIE DOES IT THE BEST. I mean accuracy is just flying off the screen at your face. But okay, you’re still like “hmm I don’t know. you better give me a good reason to sit through 2 hours of a movie,” right? Fine. I’ll give you some concrete reasons. It’s a 90s independent movie. Everyone knows those are always and forever perfect. All girl cast. And not once does anyone take off their shirt. Or make out with each other (not that there’s anything wrong with either, but ya’ll know what I’m talking about). A montage to Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” (during which, one of the girls writes an Audre Lorde quote in her notebook!!!) A girl writes “subvert the patriarchy” on a bathroom wall. A bunch of excellent actors in their youth (Lili Taylor, that guy from the Sopranos, Diane from True Blood, the guy that plays Cowboy in Gregg Araki’s Nowhere). Rapists/Abusers getting what they deserve. IT’S FREE SO WHY NOT?
